Sonia Gergis, born Yassa, grew up in a musical and artistic family with a strong piano playing tradition. She was introduced to the Italian school of piano playing by Professor Ettore Puglisi and then developed her style of piano playing by working with Russian musicians under Dr Irakle Beritze then Dean of the Cairo Academy of Music.
In England she pursued a career in music education where her breadth of experience and her depth of culture were very much appreciated. She worked for several years as Head of Music Department in an international school. She was praised by offsted inspectors on two separate occasions particularly for her sensitivity in a multicultural environment and her expertise accross the age range from nursery to A levels.
Sonia Gergis has established a successful piano teaching practice on the London Essex border where she worked for many years in partnership with some distinguished teachers including Dr Fernando Martin Pastor, Yasuka Kamizono, Miwako Miki and Eralys Fernandez.
Sonia is the author of several papers and some curricular material for Stanley Thornes Educational Publishers, The British Journal of Music Education, Primary Music Magagazine, The School Curriculum and Assessment Authority and Birmingham Area Support Services.
She is a pianist and choral singer/conductor and enjoys producing musical and fundraising events. Over the years she has been actively involved with music and charity work in Coptic churches in Cairo, London, Stevenage and Manchester.
Her latest project is The Manchester Piano Room is now open in the heart of Ancoats and close to Manchester City Centre. It is a well equipped spacious and welcoming space for teaching studio as well as a practise/rehearsal room and a hub that she shsares with her students and colleagues. The Manchester Piano Room is already attracting children and adult students. It is enjoyed by a number of amateur and professional who enjoy undisturbed practice for short or long sessions.
